Ausable River Umbrellas
oil on linen, 26 x 56
Framed $4300
The mountain waters of the Ausable River in early summer have a purifying nature to them. As this older couple enjoyed their private beach I thought that the husband wading into the water with a white t shirt was like a baptism.. a renewing his vows of life and marriage. -
Upon This Rock
oil, 44 x46
$ 4500 Framed
As I painted this image I thought of Maria as a fearless explorer on the bow of a ship. She’s wearing her grandmother’s scarf. As it blew in the wind I was reminded of fairy wings and how Maria has a little bit of fae magic in her as well. -
White Shed
oil on linen
32x24
framed $2900
As I composed this painting I was struck by the balance between the micro and macro worlds of the family farm. Here the cat, for example is the same size as the tractor and wagon in the distance. They share equal significance in my memories. I also loved seeing the balance between the rectangular shapes of the shed opening, the blue sky rectangle, the cow barn, the cement blocks, etc. It made me think of Mondrian. -
Chasm Farm
oil, 28 x 42
private collection
Just down the road from Remillard’s Farm is the Chasm Farm. It is a step back in time. Farms like it have mostly disappeared from the Adirondacks, being replaced by more economically viable larger farms. -
Spring Runoff
oil, 18 x 36, framed
$2300
Across the road from my family’s farm is the swimming hole that my siblings and I would cool off in during the summer. In the spring it becomes a very forceful river from all the snow melt. The rushing sound of the falls drowns out the cars and trucks passing over the two bridges. -
Foothills
oil, 18 x 36, Framed
$2400
Peru, New York is at the foothills of the Adirondacks. It is funny to think that the town’s name came from the South American country whose mountainous typography bears little resemblance to the gentle rolling hills of my home town. -
Tom and His Cat
oil on linen, 30 x 20
Private Collection
Because my brother Tom had just finished working with fertilizer , you find him in the process of washing his hands. To me this act takes on an almost holy ritual. Next to him is one of the many white farm cats which Tom religiously feeds daily. Behind his burly exterior is a very kind soul. -
Next Generation (Josh Remillard)
oil, 46 x 30
private collection
AWARD OF EXCELLENCE, 21st Annual International Portrait Competition, Portrait Society of America
FINALIST, 14th Annual International ARC Salon, Art Renewal Center
Josh and his brothers will eventually run the family farm. They will be the 4th generation to do so. I wanted this confident pose to reflect the idea that the future of the business is in good hands. Josh is wearing a shirt passed down from his grandfather. It’s a symbol of generational continuity. -
FLY FISHING
oil on linen, 14 x 42, framed
$2600
Much has been written on the Zen of fishing. There is something meditative about the visual rhythm created by the fishing line as it is being casted. The painting depicts a stretch of the Ausable River just below the Wilmington Notch Falls. -
Day's End
oil, 18 x 26, framed
$2500
Here you see my brother Tom in late spring checking the calf barn on the family farm one last time at the end of his 12-hour day. There is an epic beauty at that time of day as the setting sun rakes across the barns. It elevates Tom’s routine chore into something sublime. -
Maria, Mountain Girl
oil on linen, 16x36
private collection
Maria is my muse. She is wise beyond her years, forward thinking, and eternally optimistic. She belongs atop mountains. Here she is at the peak of Silver Lake Mountain. -
Thinning the Woods
oil, 16 x30, framed
$2300
The Remillards are avid runners. The farm has a running trail created by one of my bothers who owns a logging company. The trail runs through a stretch of woods planted by my grandfather. Here you see the cleared logs stacked to the side of the trail. They reminded me of a bleached pile of bones. -
Yellow Barns
oil, 32 x 32, framed
$4300
These barns are part of a neighbor’s farm just down the road. The quite meandering stream occasionally becomes a powerful body of water as attested to the fact that the small yellow barn was knocked off its foundation in a past spring flood. -
Dock
oil, 46 x72
Permanent Collection of Museum on Blue Mountain Lake
FINALIST, 13th Annual International ARC Salon, Art Renewal Center,
Permanent Collection of Museum on Blue Mountain Lake
This is the view of Silver Lake Mountain that my children grew up seeing every summer morning. It is the same view that their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents saw as well. The never-changing beauty of this place makes it sacred and reassuring. I paint the people and places in my life that I love. Silver Lake and this dock are one of those places. -
Sisters
oil on panel, 48 x 48
private collection
The two women in this painting are sisters, Marguerite and Ellie Madden. They are so close they can finish each others sentences. They spend each summer on Silver Lake and would hike up Silver Lake Mountain often. These two boulders are just off the hiking trail. I like to think of the boulders as metaphors for the sisters. They are as solid, strong, and constant; adjectives that aptly describe Marguerite, Ellie, and their relationship. -
Spitfire Shore
oil, 24 x 40
private collection
This painting commemorated the wedding of Jack and Marianna. The canoe belonged to Jack. For the painting I changed its color from green to red because I thought it made a better composition. I later learned that when Marianna was growing up her family had the identical canoe as Jack’s except theirs was red! My color change was a good omen for their marriage -

Blue Heron
oil on linen, 48 x 60
private collection
The banks of the Ausable River are home to a variety of wildlife, including the blue heron. It mates for life. The symbolism of this fact was not lost on me when I included the bird in the painting. -

Silver Lake Morning

This is my first painting of Silver Lake. I never tire of this view. I think this is what the world must have looked like when it was brand new -
Clouds over Remillard Farms
oil on linen, 28x42
private collection
This was painted the year before the silos of the family farm were torn down. I was sad to see them go; they had always been there. I did not know it at the time, but the dramatic early morning sky was foretelling that change was on its way…that an era was ending. -

Morning Chores
oil on linen, 40x30
private collection
Feeding the newborn calves is a daily chore. Here my brother Tim is taking his turn at it. The way the morning light struck the poured milk reminded me of the tiny Vermeer painting, The Milkmaid. -

Horse Serenade
Oil on Linen, 24 x 48
Sold
My son has always been an entertainer. I asked him to pose as if he were serenading the dogs and horses. The agreeable soul that he is, he went along with the request without any complaint.
